What did the Trump impeachment inquiry mean for Ukraine?
A look back at the Ukraine-linked scandal that prompted a formal House inquiry, alongside a separate doping probe involving Russia.

What was the political landscape on 25 September 2019? Washington had just moved into a new phase. On 24 September 2019, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi announced that a formal impeachment inquiry had been launched into US President Donald Trump. The matter was part of what became known as the 2019 Trump–Ukraine scandal, and it placed Ukraine at the centre of American political debate.
For Kyiv, the announcement meant that its relations with Washington were being scrutinised in a domestic US process. The inquiry was framed around the president, not around Ukraine itself, and the country's own institutions were not the subject of the announcement.
Elsewhere, on 23 September 2019, the World Anti-Doping Agency launched a probe into what it called inconsistencies in laboratory results from Russia. The agency promised the most stringent sanctions if violations were found. Russia had previously been banned from the 2018 Winter Olympics following a similar probe.
Taken together, the two developments showed how closely international scrutiny of the region was being followed in the days before 25 September 2019.
