A retrospective look at the front-line and security reports that reached the public in the days around 9 April 2024.

What did the picture of the war look like on 9 April 2024? The reports available in the preceding days pointed to continued pressure along the front, strikes on civilian areas and a warning about nuclear safety.

On 8 April 2024, shelling killed three civilians in Huliaipole, in Zaporizhzhia Oblast. The same day, heavy fighting between Russian and Ukrainian troops was reported around the city of Chasiv Yar, which Ukraine described as "difficult" and "tense".

The reports also covered an incident far from the front line. On 8 April 2024, Ukraine claimed to have damaged the Russian Navy missile ship Serpukhov in the Baltic Sea near Kaliningrad.

Nuclear safety

On 7 April 2024, the IAEA reported that Unit 6 of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant had been targeted by a drone strike. According to the statement, nuclear safety had not been compromised.

Looking back

Taken together, these reports from 7 and 8 April 2024 show a war that ran on several levels at once: civilian casualties in the south, a tense fight for a city in the east, a naval claim in the Baltic and a safety alert at a nuclear plant. For readers assessing the period, that range is the main point.
