What did three reports from April 2018 show about Ukraine's border regions?

A look back at broadcasting, a ship detention and a fatal crash in the days before 13 April 2018.

What was happening along Ukraine's edges in the days leading up to 13 April 2018? Three reports from that period point to broadcasting, maritime enforcement and a road tragedy in occupied territory.

On 12 April 2018, the television channel UATV began broadcasting in test mode to the occupied territories of Luhansk region. The launch put a Ukrainian signal in front of audiences in areas outside Kyiv's control.

Two days earlier, on 10 April 2018, Ukraine detained a Russian ship in Odesa. The vessel was suspected of illegally extracting sand.

On 8 April 2018, a bus collided with a train near Armyansk, Crimea. Five people were killed and four others were injured.

Taken together, the reports from 8, 10 and 12 April 2018 described a week in which Ukrainian authorities acted on information and law enforcement while events in Crimea brought loss of life.
