What did Ukraine's 30th independence anniversary show?

A retrospective on 24 August 2021, when Kyiv marked three decades of independence with a parade, days after a major diplomatic summit.

What did Ukraine want to show the world on 24 August 2021? The answer was visible in Kyiv, where celebrations of the 30th anniversary of independence were held across the country and the capital hosted a parade with military equipment and aircraft.

The anniversary came at the end of a crowded diplomatic few days. On 22 August 2021, the German chancellor, Angela Merkel, arrived in Kyiv and met President Volodymyr Zelensky. The following day, 23 August, the city hosted the first International Crimea Platform summit, attended by leaders and representatives of 46 countries. The participants signed a joint declaration.

A domestic change in the background

Not all the news of those days was ceremonial. On 23 August 2021, amendments to legislation on electronic passports came into force, a practical change set against the national celebrations.

A regional backdrop

Beyond Ukraine's borders, the region was also in the news. On 23 August 2021, Poland announced that it would build a wall on its border with Belarus to stop the flow of migrants entering the country through Belarus.

Taken together, the dates framed the anniversary as both a national holiday and a moment of international attention: a military parade at home, foreign guests in the capital, and a summit declaration signed by dozens of delegations a day earlier.
