A look back at a run of reports from mid-August 2021, from a polar research vessel to an evacuation to Kyiv and the death of a mayor.

What was Ukraine absorbing as 20 August 2021 arrived? The reports of the preceding days pointed in several directions at once: a scientific acquisition, a humanitarian rescue and a death that prompted a criminal investigation.

A vessel for Antarctic research

On 19 August 2021, it was reported that Ukraine had bought the research icebreaker James Clark Ross from the United Kingdom. The ship was acquired for the National Antarctic Scientific Center.

An evacuation to Kyiv

On 17 August 2021, it was reported that Sahraa Karimi, a well-known Afghan film director and the general director of the state film company Afghan Film, had been evacuated from Afghanistan to Kyiv. The evacuation followed the Taliban's capture of Kabul.

The death of a mayor

On 15 August 2021, Konstantin Pavlov, the mayor of Kryvyi Rih, was found dead at his home. As reported at the time, he had a gunshot wound. The National Police of Ukraine said they were establishing the circumstances of his death and had opened a criminal case. Pavlov was described in reports as the pro-Russian mayor of the city.

Taken together, the reports show a country handling very different matters within a single week: building its scientific capacity, receiving a person fleeing a fallen capital, and investigating the sudden death of a city's top official.
