What did Ukraine's news record before 28 May 2019?
A look back at three reports from 22 and 23 May 2019: a Cabinet decision on spelling, a record vessel launch and a reported capture of soldiers.

What was Ukraine's public agenda on 28 May 2019? The reports from the days just before it point to a mix of cultural policy, industry and war.
On 22 May 2019, the Cabinet of Ministers approved a new edition of the Ukrainian orthography, drawn up by the Ukrainian National Commission on Orthography. The decision concerned the rules of the national language.
On the same day, the Ukrainian military reported that eight Ukrainian soldiers had been captured by pro-Russian fighters near the village of Novotroyitske, in the war in Donbas. It was a reminder that the conflict continued alongside the domestic agenda.
A day later, on 23 May 2019, the Nibulon shipyard in Mykolaiv launched the self-propelled transshipper of project P-140. It was described as the largest vessel in the history of independent Ukraine.
Taken together, the reports show a country handling several matters at once: setting the rules of its language, building large vessels at home and dealing with the consequences of the fighting in the east. Each of these stories was reported separately in the days before 28 May 2019.
