A look back at the electoral and constitutional backdrop in the days before the covered date.

What did the political landscape in Kyiv look like on 11 February 2019? Two developments from the preceding days framed it: a crowded presidential race and a constitutional commitment on foreign policy.

On 8 February 2019, the Central Election Commission completed candidate registration for the presidential election. It registered 44 candidates, a record number for Ukraine.

On 7 February 2019, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted amendments to the Constitution that enshrined the country's course towards full membership of the European Union and NATO.

Together, the two events meant that voters were preparing to choose among a record field of candidates, while the country's strategic direction had just been written into its basic law.
