What did Zelenskyy's Chequers meeting mean by 21 May 2023?
A look back at the talks between Ukraine's president and the British prime minister that opened a European tour.
What had Ukraine's diplomacy achieved by 21 May 2023? One of the clearest markers was a meeting held six days earlier, on 15 May 2023, when President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak at Chequers.
The encounter was reported as part of Zelenskyy's 2023 visit to Europe. Chequers, the prime minister's country residence, served as the venue for the talks between the two leaders.
The reports from that time describe the meeting itself and its setting, and they are the basis for this account. By 21 May 2023 the Chequers talks stood as the Ukrainian president's meeting with the British government's head on that European trip.
