What New Zealand's troop pledge signalled on 15 August 2022
A look back at a training commitment announced on 15 August 2022, and a Latvian parliamentary declaration four days earlier.

What did support for Ukraine look like beyond the battlefield on 15 August 2022? On that date, New Zealand's prime minister, Jacinda Ardern, announced the deployment of 120 New Zealand troops to the United Kingdom, where they would help train Ukrainian forces.
The announcement was practical rather than symbolic. Training was to take place in the United Kingdom, so the contribution was made through a partner country instead of inside Ukraine. The size of the deployment, 120 personnel, was set out at the outset.
A political signal had come four days earlier. On 11 August 2022, the Latvian Parliament declared Russia a state sponsor of terrorism over its invasion of Ukraine. The step concerned Latvia's relations with Russia and was taken in response to the invasion.
Taken together, the two moves show different forms of backing: a legislature making a formal declaration and a government committing military personnel to training. Both responded to the same war, and both were announced in the same week of August 2022.
