What Poland's Warsaw parade and the Odesa strikes showed

A look back at two reports from 14 and 15 August 2023, set side by side.

What did the war look like on 15 August 2023? Two reports from the preceding days offer a narrow but telling picture, one of display and one of attack.

On 15 August 2023, Poland showed its weapons and defence systems at a military parade in Warsaw. The parade involved 2,000 troops, 200 vehicles and 100 aircraft. It was reported in the context of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

A day earlier, on 14 August 2023, Russian forces struck Odesa with missiles and drones. Three people were injured and civilian infrastructure was damaged.

Two reports, one war

The two events were separate, and the reports do not link them. Placed side by side, they show how the invasion shaped public life on either side of the border. In Warsaw, the state put its military strength on view in a parade of considerable scale. In Odesa, civilians and their infrastructure bore the effects of missiles and drones.

For an international readership, the contrast is a reminder that the war was felt in different ways: as a matter of visible preparedness in one country, and as direct damage and injury in another.
