What the 8 January 2024 strikes showed about air defence
A look back at a large Russian missile and drone attack and what the reported interception figures meant.

What did the Russian attack of 8 January 2024 reveal about the strain on Ukraine's air defences? Russia launched a massive missile and drone assault across the country, and the reported figures give a mixed picture.
Ukraine said it shot down all eight drones but only 18 of the 51 missiles. The gap between the two numbers is the central point of the day: drones were fully countered, while most of the missiles were not reported as intercepted. At least four people were killed and 38 injured in Dnipropetrovsk, Kharkiv, Khmelnytskyi and Zaporizhzhia Oblasts.
The strike came two days after another deadly attack. On 6 January 2024, local authorities said Russian forces hit Pokrovsk Raion in Donetsk Oblast with S-300 missiles, killing at least 11 people, including five children, and injuring eight others.
Taken together, the two days showed civilians bearing the cost of repeated missile attacks across several regions, from the front-line east to oblasts further away. The interception figures for 8 January 2024 pointed to where the pressure was greatest: missiles, not drones. Beyond those figures, the reports of the day set out no further assessment.
