What the announced Alaska summit meant on 12 August 2025

A look back at the days before Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin met to discuss ending the war in Ukraine.

What did the diplomatic picture look like on 12 August 2025? It was dominated by an announcement made two days earlier: U.S. president Donald Trump said on 10 August that he would meet Russian president Vladimir Putin in Alaska on 15 August for talks on ending the war in Ukraine.

On 12 August, therefore, the summit was still ahead. The meeting had a date and a place, and its stated purpose was to discuss ending the war.

The summit was later held on 15 August 2025 at Joint Base Elmendorf–Richardson in Anchorage, Alaska. The main topic was the war in Ukraine. It ended without an agreement being announced. Trump later suggested that, in his view, the onus was now on Ukraine to cede territory in order to end the war.

That outcome was unknown on 12 August. What was known then was the format: a bilateral meeting between the two leaders, announced by Trump, with the war in Ukraine at the centre of the agenda.
