What the first days of October 2020 asked of Ukraine

A look back at 5 October 2020 and the news of the days just before it: wildfires in the east, a theatre anniversary in Lviv and sanctions on Belarus.

What was weighing on Ukraine on 5 October 2020? The reports from the days just before that date point to three very different stories: loss, celebration and a diplomatic decision close to the country's borders.

The gravest news came on 1 October 2020, when a series of wildfires swept through part of eastern Ukraine. Eight people were killed and ten others were injured. For a public that looks to its institutions for protection and emergency response, the toll set the tone for the start of the month.

The mood in Lviv on 4 October 2020 was different. The Solomiya Krushelnytska Lviv National Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre marked its 120th anniversary. The occasion was a reminder that public cultural institutions are part of the country's civic life alongside government and reform.

Beyond Ukraine's borders, on 2 October 2020 the European Council agreed on sanctions against Belarus. Cyprus had been opposing the decision, and its opposition was lifted when the Council also agreed on a warning to Turkey. The package linked two files that had been debated separately: relations with Belarus, and relations with Turkey.

Taken together, these reports show how varied the agenda was as 5 October 2020 began: a domestic tragedy, a cultural milestone and a European decision on a neighbouring country.
