What the Giuliani associates' arrests meant for Ukraine's politics, 11 October 2019

A look back at the reports from 10 October 2019 that placed Kyiv at the centre of a US political scandal and a very long press event.

What was the news picture for Ukraine on 11 October 2019? It was shaped by two reports dated 10 October 2019, one about a United States legal case and one about a record-setting press event.

According to a spokesman for the District Court for the SDNY, two associates of Rudy Giuliani were arrested on 10 October 2019 for campaign finance violations. The charges were connected to efforts to discredit presidential candidate Joe Biden. The case belonged to what became known as the 2019 Trump–Ukraine scandal.

That scandal, as later described, arose from attempts by US president Donald Trump to press Ukraine to investigate his political rival Biden, and so potentially damage Biden's campaign for the 2020 Democratic Party presidential nomination. Giuliani, Trump's personal lawyer, was among those enlisted to apply that pressure. Contacts between the White House and the Ukrainian government culminated in a phone call between Trump and Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy on 25 July 2019. Later accounts also said Trump blocked a congressionally mandated $400 million military aid package.

A marathon press event

On the same day, 10 October 2019, Zelenskyy held what was reported as the longest press conference in world history. It lasted more than 14 hours. During it he answered more than 500 questions from almost 300 journalists.

The two reports from 10 October 2019 sat side by side: a US court spokesman confirming arrests tied to the effort against Biden, and a Ukrainian president spending more than 14 hours answering reporters.
