What the killing of Andriy Parubiy meant for Ukraine

A look back at 2 September 2025, three days after the shooting of the former parliamentary speaker in Lviv.

What was Ukraine absorbing on 2 September 2025? A run of violent blows in the space of a few days, topped by the killing of a prominent political figure.

On 30 August 2025, Andriy Parubiy, a sitting member of parliament and former speaker of the Verkhovna Rada, was shot dead in Lviv. He was 54. As reported at the time, the attack took place at around 10:35 am on Yefremov Street, and a manhunt was launched for the gunman. By 1 September, a suspect had been arrested in Khmelnytskyi Oblast.

The killing came days after a heavy assault on the capital. On 28 August 2025, Russian forces launched nearly 600 drones and more than 30 ballistic and cruise missiles at Kyiv, striking multiple residential areas. The attack killed 25 people, including four children, and wounded 63 others, among them 11 children.

The same day, the Ukrainian spy ship Simferopol was sunk by a drone strike on the Danube. Two people were killed, and several others were missing or injured.

Taken together, these events set the backdrop for 2 September 2025: a country mourning a former parliamentary leader, counting the dead from the strike on Kyiv, and watching an investigation move from manhunt to arrest.
