What the killing of Andriy Parubiy meant for Ukraine
A look back at the shooting in Lviv and the arrest that followed, as the country absorbed the loss of a former parliamentary speaker.

What was known on 1 September 2025, two days after Andriy Parubiy was shot dead in Lviv? The essentials were stark. Parubiy, a sitting member of parliament and former speaker of the Verkhovna Rada, was killed on 30 August 2025. He was 54.
The attack took place at around 10:35 am local time on Yefremov Street. As reported at the time, an unknown gunman was responsible, and a manhunt was launched for the suspect.
By 1 September, a suspect had been arrested in Khmelnytskyi Oblast. That was a swift development after the shooting, and it moved the case from a search for an unidentified attacker to an investigation of a detained person.
Why it mattered
The victim's standing explains the weight of the case. Parubiy was a serving legislator and had previously led the national parliament. The killing of such a figure, in a western city far from the front line, was a shock to public life and a test for the institutions responsible for investigating it.
What remained to be answered
An arrest is a first step, not an explanation. As of 1 September 2025, the key matters for investigators and the public were to establish who the detained person was, how the attack was carried out and what lay behind it. Those answers would determine how the killing came to be understood, and the arrest in Khmelnytskyi Oblast was the starting point for that work.
