What the late October 2024 reports signalled from the front

Reports from 29 October 2024 pointed to faster Russian advances in Donetsk Oblast and a first known Ukrainian drone strike in Chechnya.

What did the reports reaching Kyiv and its partners on 30 October 2024 say about the direction of the war? Two items from 29 October stood out, and they pointed in different directions.

The first concerned the east. Russia claimed it had taken the cities of Selydove and Hirnyk in Donetsk Oblast. Open-source data indicated that Russian forces were advancing at their fastest pace in at least one year, and there were signs of North Korean involvement in the war. Donetsk is part of Ukraine's easternmost regions, which, together with Luhansk and Kharkiv, have been a theatre of operations since February 2022.

The second item concerned Russian territory. A drone strike targeted a Special Forces University in Gudermes, Chechnya, which was reported as the first known drone attack in Chechnya by the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Chechen Republic head Ramzan Kadyrov vowed to retaliate harshly against Ukraine.

Reading the two together

The reports described pressure on the ground in Donetsk Oblast and, at the same time, Ukrainian reach into a Russian region far from the front. The pace of advance mattered because it was measured against the previous year. The signs of North Korean involvement added a further element to the picture, though the reports described them only as signs.

The Chechnya strike was notable for its location and for the public response from Kadyrov, whose vow of harsh retaliation was the only reaction reported. Beyond that, the reports gave no detail on damage or casualties, and none should be assumed.

For observers of Ukraine's governance and public life, the point was practical: a state under faster territorial pressure in the east was also demonstrating a longer-range capability. Both claims rested on early reporting, and the Russian claims over Selydove and Hirnyk were, at that point, claims.
