What the shelling near Kherson showed on 3 August 2022

A look back at reports of attacks on civilians and a disputed account of fighting in Nagorno-Karabakh in early August 2022.

What did the first days of August 2022 reveal about the danger facing civilians in southern Ukraine? By 3 August 2022, the answer was already visible in a report from the day before.

On 2 August 2022, Ukraine's Operational Command South said that Russian shelling near Kherson Oblast had killed three people who were evacuating in a minibus. The victims were leaving the area when they were hit, which shows that even flight from the fighting carried mortal risk.

A separate dispute in Nagorno-Karabakh

On 1 August 2022, authorities of Artsakh in Nagorno-Karabakh reported shelling and heavy gunfire near two villages. Azerbaijan and Russian forces in the region denied the reports. The competing accounts left the situation contested, within the wider Armenia–Azerbaijan border crisis.

What follows from this

The two episodes are separate, and nothing links them directly. Both, however, show how claims about violence were made and disputed as the war continued. In the Kherson case, a Ukrainian military command attributed deaths to Russian shelling. In Nagorno-Karabakh, one side reported fire while others rejected the account. For readers looking back at 3 August 2022, the Kherson deaths are the starkest measure of the cost to civilians.
