What the war's news looked like on 6 January 2025
A look back at a Kherson bus strike and the claims that preceded it in the first days of January 2025.

What did a few days of war reporting look like at the start of 2025? On 6 January 2025, a Russian drone attacked a civilian passenger bus in Kherson, reportedly killing at least one person and injuring at least nine others.
Kherson has been shelled repeatedly throughout the Russian invasion, and the attacks on the city intensified after its liberation, according to later accounts of the strikes.
Two days earlier, on 4 January 2025, the Russian Armed Forces claimed to have shot down eight American ATACMS missiles fired by Ukraine and vowed retaliation. The same day, a war correspondent for the Russian newspaper Izvestia was killed in a Ukrainian drone strike in Donetsk Oblast.
Donetsk, Luhansk and Kharkiv have been the site of an ongoing theatre of operations since the start of the war in February 2022. The reports from 4 and 6 January show how the fighting reached both the front-line regions and civilian life in the south.
