What Trump's Alaska summit announcement meant for Kyiv

An analysis of the announcement of a US–Russia meeting on ending the war in Ukraine, and the positions each side brought to it.

What did it mean for Ukraine when a meeting between the leaders of the United States and Russia was announced? On 11 August 2025, that question was at the centre of attention in Kyiv, a day after US president Donald Trump said he would meet Russian president Vladimir Putin in Alaska on 15 August to discuss ending the war in Ukraine.

The announcement

The announcement, made on 10 August 2025, set a date and a place for direct talks between the two leaders on the war. It placed the question of ending the fighting on a short timetable, with just days between the announcement and the planned meeting.

The positions

The two sides in the war had set out very different aims in earlier peace efforts. Putin sought recognition of all occupied land as Russian, and the regions Russia claims but does not fully occupy. He also sought guarantees that Ukraine would never join NATO, a curtailment of Ukraine's military and the lifting of sanctions against Russia.

Ukraine's president Volodymyr Zelenskyy sought a ceasefire, a full withdrawal of Russian troops, and the return of prisoners and kidnapped Ukrainian children. He also sought prosecution of Russian leaders for war crimes and security guarantees to prevent further aggression.

What followed

The summit took place as planned on 15 August 2025 at Joint Base Elmendorf–Richardson in Anchorage, Alaska, with the war in Ukraine as its main topic. It ended without an agreement being announced. Trump later suggested that, in his view, the onus was now on Ukraine to cede territory in order to end the war.

Seen from 11 August 2025, the gap between the two sets of demands was already wide, and the announcement of the meeting did not alter it. The later outcome of the summit showed that the date alone had not narrowed it.
