A look back at reports from 16 July 2022 on strikes in Kharkiv and Dnipropetrovsk oblasts and claims about the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant.

What was the situation in Ukraine as 17 July 2022 began? Reports from the previous day, 16 July, described fresh strikes on two cities and an accusation concerning Europe's attention-drawing nuclear site at Zaporizhzhia.

Russian missiles struck Chuhuiv in Kharkiv Oblast, killing three civilians and injuring three others. In Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, more than 50 Grad rockets hit the city of Nikopol, killing two people.

As reported at the time, the strikes followed an order from Russian defence minister Sergei Shoigu to the military to expand operations in Ukraine in order to "protect the Donbas".

The same day, the president of Energoatom, the Ukrainian nuclear energy authority, accused Russian forces of using the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant to store weapons and of shelling the surrounding area from it.
