A look back at the diplomatic, military and legal developments in the days before 26 August 2024.

What was on the desk of Ukraine's leadership on 26 August 2024? The reports from the preceding days show a mix of diplomacy, battlefield pressure, domestic weapons production and a significant legal step.

Weapons and the front

On 25 August 2024, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy publicly presented the Ukrainian-produced Palianytsia rocket drone and loitering munition. It was intended to serve as the Ukrainian counterpart to the Russian ZALA Kub-BLA.

Four days earlier, on 21 August 2024, Zelenskyy had acknowledged advances by Russian forces on the Pokrovsk front. He announced the strengthening of Ukrainian positions in the region to resist further advances.

Diplomacy

On 23 August 2024, during a meeting in Kyiv, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged Zelenskyy to end the war and volunteered to act as a mediator in talks between Zelenskyy and Russia. In a later national address, Zelenskyy thanked Modi but said India needed to respect international law as well as Ukraine's territorial integrity and sovereignty.

A legal step

On 21 August 2024, the Ukrainian parliament approved the Rome Statute, the treaty establishing the International Criminal Court. The vote allowed the country to become a state party once the government ratifies with the Secretary-General of the United Nations.

Taken together, the reports from those days show Ukraine's leadership working on several tracks at once: acknowledging pressure on the front, presenting home-produced weapons, answering an offer of mediation and moving a major international treaty through parliament.
