A look back at the public events that framed Ukrainian political life in the days up to 25 August 2020.

What was shaping Ukraine's public life on 25 August 2020? In the days before that date, the pandemic and a notable loss in the country's scientific establishment drew the most attention.

On 23 August 2020, a spokesperson for her party reported that former prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko was in serious condition after testing positive for COVID-19. The report showed that the virus had reached the upper levels of Ukrainian politics.

On 19 August 2020, Borys Paton, an eminent Ukrainian scientist who had led the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine as its president from 1962, died at the age of 101. His tenure ran through to 2020, so his death closed a presidency that had lasted nearly six decades.

A regional backdrop

The pandemic also shaped decisions beyond Ukraine's borders. On 21 August 2020, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán announced on state radio that Hungary would tighten border-crossing rules from 1 September 2020. He cited rising infection numbers in neighbouring countries.

Taken together, these developments show a region adjusting to the spread of COVID-19 while Ukraine dealt with both a health emergency touching its political class and the loss of a long-serving public figure in science.
