Why Syrskyi's dismissal stirred questions over Ukraine's command

A retrospective on the removal of the commander-in-chief amid protests, and what the change of command involved.

What did it mean when Ukraine changed its military leadership amid street protests? On 22 July 2026 that question followed a decision taken the previous day, 21 July, when President Volodymyr Zelenskyy dismissed Oleksandr Syrskyi as commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

The president appointed Mykhailo Drapatyi, until then commander of the Joint Forces, to replace him. The dismissal came against a backdrop of protests. As reported at the time, they were linked to the removal of defence minister Mykhailo Fedorov, and Ukrainian reports also described demands for Syrskyi's removal.

What the sequence showed

The order of events matters for any assessment. A defence minister was removed, protests followed, and the head of the armed forces was dismissed in turn. The post then went to a serving senior commander rather than to an outside figure.

For a government that relies on public trust in its institutions during wartime, the episode showed how closely decisions on military leadership and public sentiment were bound together. Drapatyi took over the post in that atmosphere.
