Zelensky in hospital as Kyiv tightens weekend rules

Posted: | Filed under: Opinion | by Borderland staff

A look back at 12 November 2020, when Ukraine's president was admitted with COVID-19 a day after the government changed its quarantine policy.

What did Ukraine's leadership look like on 12 November 2020? It was a day of illness at the top and of new restrictions across the country.

On 12 November 2020, President Volodymyr Zelensky was hospitalised after contracting COVID-19 earlier that week. His admission placed the pandemic at the centre of national political life.

The day before, on 11 November 2020, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine had abolished the adaptive quarantine system and introduced a weekend lockdown. The two developments came within roughly a day of each other.

For readers looking back, the sequence is simple: a change in the national quarantine regime on 11 November, followed on 12 November by the news that the head of state was in hospital with the virus. The reports of the time do not link the two, and neither should this retrospective.
