Zelenskyy's European tour before 19 May 2023
A look back at the Ukrainian president's meetings with the Pope, Germany's chancellor and Britain's prime minister in the days before 19 May 2023.
What had Ukraine's president been doing in the days leading up to 19 May 2023? He had spent them travelling in Europe, meeting leaders in three separate stops.
On 13 May 2023, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met Pope Francis during a private audience in the Vatican. The meeting opened a visit to Europe that continued over the following days.
On 14 May 2023, Zelenskyy met German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in Berlin, Germany. It was the second stop on the trip, coming a day after the Vatican audience.
On 15 May 2023, he met British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak at Chequers. That meeting completed the sequence of talks reported in the days before 19 May 2023.
Taken together, the three meetings, in the Vatican, Berlin and at Chequers, formed the 2023 visit by Zelenskyy to Europe, held over three consecutive days from 13 May to 15 May 2023.
