Zelenskyy's Washington trip and the Donetsk hotel shelling
A look back at 21 December 2022, when Ukraine's president made his first trip abroad since the full-scale invasion, and shelling hit Donetsk.

What did Ukraine's president do on 21 December 2022, and what else was happening in the war that day? Volodymyr Zelenskyy arrived in the United States on his first official trip abroad since the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
A short visit to Washington
The visit to Washington, D.C. lasted about 10 hours. During it, Zelenskyy met US President Joe Biden, held a joint press conference and addressed a joint session of the United States Congress. Ahead of the visit, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced a US$1.85 billion military aid package for Ukraine.
Shelling in Donetsk
The same day, two people were killed and five others injured when a hotel and a restaurant in Donetsk were shelled. Among the injured were Dmitry Rogozin, a former Russian Deputy Prime Minister and head of Roscosmos, and Vitaliy Khotsenko, Prime Minister of the Donetsk People's Republic.
The two events, one diplomatic and one military, were reported on the same date: the president's journey to the US capital and the casualties in Donetsk.
