Zimbabwe confirms 15 citizens died fighting for Russia
A Zimbabwean cabinet minister said most recruits were lured through social media, with more than 60 others still on the front line.

How many Zimbabweans had been drawn into Russia's war against Ukraine? By 28 March 2026, Harare had given an official answer: 15 of its citizens had been killed after being recruited by Russia to fight, and more than 60 others were still on the front line.
The figures were confirmed on 26 March 2026 by Soda Zhemu, a cabinet minister, who said most of the recruits had been lured to Russia through social media.
The confirmation formed part of the wider picture of foreign involvement in the Russo-Ukrainian war. Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine on 24 February 2022, escalating a conflict that had begun in 2014.
The Zimbabwean statement put numbers on the recruitment of citizens from outside the region of the war, and pointed to online channels as the main route by which they reached Russia.
