Amsterdam court ruling and record COVID deaths: Ukraine on 27 October 2021

A look back at two developments reported just before 27 October 2021: a Dutch appeal court's decision on the Scythian gold and a new COVID-19 death record in Ukraine.

What was the news reaching Ukraine on 27 October 2021? Two reports from 26 October set the tone: a court decision in the Netherlands and a grim pandemic milestone at home.

Scythian gold to go to the state

The Amsterdam Court of Appeal ruled on 26 October 2021 that the exhibits of the "Scythian gold" exhibition should be returned to the Ukrainian state. The ruling settled where the artefacts were to go, with Ukraine named as the recipient.

Record COVID-19 toll

On the same day, Ukraine reported a record 734 deaths from COVID-19 in the previous 24 hours. The figure brought the nationwide death toll to 64,936.

Across the region

To Ukraine's west, Poland raised the number of soldiers deployed on its border with Belarus from 6,000 to about 10,000. The move was meant to stop further illegal crossings by Middle Eastern migrants who, according to reports at the time, were being flown in by the Belarusian government. It followed an incident over the previous weekend in which two border guards were hospitalised after a group of 70 migrants stormed a section of the border.
