Anti-war protests in Russia and Kazakhstan, as seen on 8 March 2022
A look back at the demonstrations against the invasion of Ukraine reported in the days before 8 March 2022.

What did opposition to the invasion of Ukraine look like beyond Ukraine's borders by 8 March 2022? Reports from the preceding days pointed to street protests in two neighbouring countries, with very different outcomes for those who took part.
In Russia, demonstrations against the invasion were held in cities across the country on 6 March 2022. Around 4,000 anti-war demonstrators were arrested, as reported at the time.
In Kazakhstan, the picture was different. Also on 6 March 2022, the country was reported to be allowing anti-war protests amid fears that it could be sanctioned. Protesters gathered in Almaty to oppose Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
Taken together, the reports from 6 March 2022 show demonstrations against the invasion in at least two countries in the region, and mass arrests in one of them.
