How a forfeit in Switzerland tie reshaped Ukraine's Nations League
A UEFA appeals ruling on 25 November 2020 sent the national team down a division, as the country's COVID-19 figures hit successive records.

What does a match that never took place do to a season? On 25 November 2020, the answer came from UEFA's appeals committee, which awarded Switzerland a technical victory over Ukraine in their 2020–2021 Nations League fixture, the game that had been scheduled for 17 November.
The consequence was immediate and concrete. Because of the forfeit, Ukraine's national team would play in Division B in the next edition of the competition. The ruling settled on paper what had not been decided on the pitch.
A country counting cases
The decision came while Ukraine was in the middle of a sharp rise in COVID-19 infections. In the days before the ruling, daily figures repeatedly set new highs.
On 19 November 2020, Ukraine reported 13,357 new cases and a record 257 deaths in 24 hours. That took the national death toll to 10,369 and the total number of cases to 583,510.
The next day, 20 November, the country recorded 14,575 new cases, lifting the total to 598,085. On 21 November came another single-day record of 14,580 cases, and the nationwide total reached 612,665.
What the ruling meant
The appeals committee's decision gave the sporting outcome a formal end: a technical defeat for Ukraine in the Switzerland match and a place in Division B for the following season. Set beside the case figures reported in the preceding days, it marked one more consequence of a period in which the pandemic was shaping public life in Ukraine.
