How Ukrainian officials reacted to the Florida shooting suspect
Officials in Kyiv moved to put distance between Ukraine and the man suspected of targeting Donald Trump, and warned of Russian propaganda.

What did Ukraine say when a suspect in the attack on Donald Trump turned out to have links to the cause of Ukraine's defence? On 16 September 2024, Ukrainian officials publicly distanced themselves from the suspect and warned that Russia would try to exploit the situation for anti-Ukraine propaganda.
The suspect was reported to have protested in support of the Azov Brigade and to have regularly called for international support and troops for Ukraine. Those reports prompted the response from Ukrainian officials.
The shooting had taken place on 15 September 2024. Donald Trump, then a former US president and the Republican Party's nominee in the 2024 presidential election, survived an assassination attempt while golfing at Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida. The suspect was identified as 58-year-old Ryan Wesley Routh, a roofer and Russo-Ukrainian war activist. It was later established that he was motivated by a wish to prevent Trump from being elected.
The incident came two months after Trump survived an earlier assassination attempt at a campaign rally near Butler, Pennsylvania.
For Kyiv, the concern on 16 September 2024 was the narrative that could follow. By separating Ukraine from the suspect and flagging the likelihood of a Russian propaganda push, officials sought to get ahead of attempts to tie the country to the attack.
