A look back at civilian harm in Ukraine reported on 1 August 2023, and at the strikes and protests of the days just before.

What did civilians in Ukraine face on 1 August 2023? As reported at the time, a Russian airstrike hit a hospital in Kherson, killing one civilian and injuring five others.

The Kherson attack came a day after a Russian ballistic missile strike on Kryvyi Rih, in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast. On 31 July 2023, the strike hit an apartment complex and a university building. At least six civilians were reported killed and 75 others injured.

Taken together, the reports from 31 July and 1 August 2023 describe strikes on residential and public buildings, including a medical facility, in two different cities.

Protest in Belgrade

Reaction to the war was also visible outside Ukraine. On 30 July 2023, anti-war activists protested in Belgrade, Serbia. The protest followed problems encountered by two prominent anti-war and anti-Putin activists who had tried to enter the country.
