Kyiv attack of 19 August 2026 killed at least 15
A retrospective on the Russian missile and drone strike that damaged homes, a children's hospital and a school in the Ukrainian capital.

What did Ukraine's capital endure on 19 August 2026? According to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, a Russian missile and drone attack on Kyiv killed at least 15 people and injured 40 others.
The strike damaged residential buildings, a children's hospital and a school, placing civilian sites among those hit in the assault. Mr Zelenskyy's figures were the casualty count given on the day.
A separate court case in Russia
Two days earlier, on 17 August 2026, a Russian court sentenced Lev Shlosberg, deputy chairperson of the Yabloko party, to 11 years and one month in prison. He was convicted of discrediting the armed forces and spreading disinformation after publicly condemning the Russo-Ukrainian war.
The case belongs to the wider record of protest against the invasion. Demonstrations against the war have taken place in many places worldwide, including in Russia and in Russian-occupied Ukraine.
The two developments, a deadly attack on Kyiv and a long prison term for a Russian opposition politician who criticised the war, fell within three days of each other in August 2026.
