Kyiv Pride concludes three-day street program after tense weekend

KyivPride ended its three-day September 17–19 program with the weekend’s largest Equality March, amid disputes and questions about police protection and trust.

KYIV — KyivPride concluded its three-day street program Sunday with the largest demonstration of the weekend.

The public events began September 17 with a smaller march, continued Saturday and culminated in the principal Equality March on September 19.

The first two days were reportedly more tense than the organizers had anticipated.

Witnesses described arguments between Pride participants and opponents on Friday. One confrontation allegedly became physical before police intervened.

Saturday brought another incident near the demonstration route. Officers reportedly separated opposing groups after a dispute escalated.

No major injuries were reported in the accounts used for this article.

The weekend also revived a longstanding question among some members of the LGBT+ community: how much confidence should participants place in state institutions during a confrontation?

Several activists interviewed for the article questioned whether police and other government institutions consistently protect vulnerable groups in the same way.

They also raised concerns about the possibility that individual officers may personally share hostile attitudes toward LGBT+ people. Such concerns, they argued, could make some participants reluctant to approach police even when they believe they are in danger.

That does not mean that all officers were viewed negatively. Other participants credited the police presence with preventing several confrontations from becoming more serious.

The principal march on September 19 was considerably larger than the preceding events. Diplomats and representatives of foreign missions participated alongside Ukrainian activists and other marchers.

Opponents of KyivPride also held demonstrations nearby.

The three-day sequence formed the central street component of a broader Pride season that had already included events earlier in September.

For organizers, the weekend represented a return to large-scale public Pride activity following the disruption caused by the pandemic.
