Makiivka strike and the dispute over casualty figures

Posted: | Filed under: Society | by Borderland staff

A look back at the strike on a vocational school used as barracks, and the gap between Ukrainian and Russian accounts of its toll.

What did the world know by 5 January 2023 about the strike on Makiivka? The attack, carried out in the night of 31 December 2022 to 1 January 2023, hit the building of Professional Technical School No. 19 in Makiivka, Donetsk Oblast, which was serving as military barracks for mobilised Russian soldiers.

The central issue was the toll. Ukraine claimed that hundreds of Russian soldiers were killed and injured. Ukrainian officials put the number of dead at 400. Russian authorities acknowledged several casualties but suggested lower figures.

A widening gap

Russian officials initially confirmed 63 dead. Two days after the strike, they raised that figure to 89. That revision, reported by 5 January 2023, narrowed the distance between the two accounts without closing it: the Ukrainian claim remained well above the Russian one.

What the strike involved

The Ukrainian Ground Forces launched the attack using HIMARS rockets. It destroyed the building and military equipment nearby.

The episode showed how contested casualty reporting could be. The two sides gave figures that differed several times over, and the Russian side changed its own number within days. The independent facts of the strike were the target, the weapon and the destruction of the building. The full toll remained a matter of competing claims.
