Milan appeals court acquits Ukrainian guardsman Vitalii Markiv
A look back at the ruling that overturned a 24-year sentence, and at Ukraine's COVID-19 count a day earlier.

What happened in a Milan courtroom on 3 November 2020? The Milan Court of Appeal acquitted Vitalii Markiv, a Ukrainian National Guard serviceman, finding him not guilty of the crime for which he had been sentenced on 12 July 2019 to 24 years in prison.
The appeal ruling reversed the earlier verdict in full, according to reports at the time. Markiv had been convicted in 2019 and the sentence he received was 24 years of imprisonment.
The pandemic backdrop
The day before the ruling, on 2 November 2020, Ukraine passed 400,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19, a figure reported as part of the wider pandemic picture in Europe and in Ukraine.
