A look back at the sentence handed to the party's deputy chairperson after he publicly condemned the war against Ukraine.

What happened to a Russian politician who spoke out against the war? On 17 August 2026, a Russian court sentenced Lev Shlosberg, deputy chairperson of the Yabloko party, to 11 years and one month in prison.

The court found him guilty of discrediting the armed forces and spreading disinformation. The charges followed his public condemnation of the Russo-Ukrainian war.

The case belongs to the wider history of protests against the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Demonstrations against the invasion took place simultaneously in many places worldwide, including in Russia and in Russian-occupied Ukraine.

The verdict of 17 August 2026 showed the penalty a prominent opposition figure in Russia faced for open criticism of the war: more than a decade behind bars.
