Two German reports from late October 2024, in context

A Munich court case over an attack on Ukrainian soldiers and a new study on falling birth rates were both reported in Germany in the days before 28 October 2024.

What was happening in Germany in the days leading up to 28 October 2024, and why did it matter to Ukrainians? Two reports from 23 October 2024 offer a partial answer, and both touch on the effects of Russia's war beyond Ukraine's borders.

The first concerned a criminal case. A court in Munich charged a Russian man with stabbing two Ukrainian soldiers at a shopping centre in Murnau am Staffelsee, Bavaria, in April. The charge was reported on 23 October 2024.

The second was economic and demographic. The Ifo Institute for Economic Research reported that Germany's birth rate fell by 13% nationally between 2021 and 2023, and by as much as 17.5% in the east of the country. The institute attributed the decline to several causes, among them the COVID-19 pandemic, the Russo-Ukrainian war and high inflation.

The two items are unrelated in subject. Together they show how the war was reported in Germany in late October 2024: in a courtroom, where Ukrainian soldiers were the victims of an attack, and in a statistical study, where the war was named among the factors cited for a falling birth rate.
