Two international rulings against Russia in the days before 27 June 2024

A look back at the legal developments from 25 June 2024 that framed the news on 27 June 2024.

What had international courts decided about Russia's conduct by 27 June 2024? Two rulings had come two days earlier, on 25 June 2024, from separate institutions.

The International Criminal Court, in its investigation in Ukraine, issued arrest warrants for Valery Gerasimov, Russia's Chief of the General Staff, and for Sergei Shoigu, a former defence minister.

On the same day, the European Court of Human Rights unanimously found Russia guilty of systematic violations of human rights in the Crimean peninsula.

Together, the two decisions meant that by 27 June 2024 senior Russian military and former government figures were subject to international arrest warrants, and that a European court had reached a unanimous finding on rights violations in Crimea.
