A look back at a ship detention in Odesa and a fatal crossing collision in Crimea, reported in the days before 13 April 2018.

What was making news in and around Ukraine in the days leading up to 13 April 2018? Two reports stood out, one from the Black Sea coast and one from the Crimean peninsula.

On 10 April 2018, Ukraine detained a Russian ship in Odesa. The vessel was suspected of illegally extracting sand. The report gave the suspicion as the reason for the detention.

Two days earlier, on 8 April 2018, a bus collided with a train near Armyansk, in Crimea. Five people were killed and four others were injured.

The two events were unconnected, and the reports do not link them. Together they show the range of what was covered in the days before 13 April 2018: a case at a Ukrainian port involving a Russian-flagged vessel, and a deadly collision on the Crimean peninsula that cost five lives.
