Two stories touching Ukraine, days before 25 October 2019
A look back at a crash report and a US court hearing that drew Ukraine into the news in the days before 25 October 2019.

What did the news about Ukraine look like on 25 October 2019? Two items from the preceding days, both dated 23 October 2019, show how different the stories were: one technical and one political.
A final report on the Yirol crash
On 23 October 2019 Ukraine released the final report into the Yirol crash of a Let L-410 Turbolet. The report was prepared by South Sudan. It concluded that mistakes by both the crew and maintenance, together with poor weather, combined to cause the disaster. The finding spread responsibility across several factors rather than assigning it to one.
Giuliani associates in court
The same day, at a hearing in New York City, Lev Parnas and Igor Fruman pleaded not guilty. They were two associates of Rudy Giuliani, the personal lawyer of US President Donald Trump. They had aided Giuliani in a search in Ukraine for detrimental information on the president's political opponents. The charges alleged that they funneled $350,000 in illegal donations to a pro-Trump political committee and another $20,000 to former Republican Congressman Pete Sessions, while acting on behalf of at least one Ukrainian government official.
The hearing belonged to the wider 2019 Trump–Ukraine scandal. That scandal arose from attempts by Trump to press Ukraine to investigate his rival Joe Biden, and it involved a blocked $400 million military aid package and a phone call between Trump and Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy on 25 July 2019.
Why it mattered
The two items had little in common beyond Ukraine's name. One was an aviation inquiry that reached its conclusion. The other was a US criminal case in which the not-guilty pleas marked only an early stage, and the charges concerned the conduct of the defendants and their work on behalf of a Ukrainian official.
