Posted: | Filed under: Society | by Borderland staff

A look back at 9 January 2020, the first full day after a Boeing 737-800 bound for Kyiv went down near Tehran with 176 people on board.

What was known on 9 January 2020 about the loss of Ukraine International Airlines Flight 752? As reported at the time, a Boeing 737-800 crashed on 8 January 2020 while taking off from Tehran Imam Khomeini International Airport, killing all 176 people on board. The cause was under investigation.

The flight was a scheduled international service from Tehran to Kyiv, operated by Ukraine International Airlines. The crash came amid the 2019–20 Persian Gulf crisis, which formed the backdrop to the investigation.

What emerged later

The cause was established only later. Subsequent accounts of the event state that the aircraft was shot down by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps shortly after takeoff. That was not established in the reports available on 9 January 2020, when the inquiry was still open and the full circumstances of the crash were unresolved.
