A retrospective on the milestone reached after a record daily rise in infections at the end of October 2020.

How quickly was the pandemic moving in Ukraine by 2 November 2020? Quickly enough that the country went past 400,000 recorded COVID-19 cases on that day.

The milestone came just two days after a record daily rise. On 31 October 2020, Ukraine reported 8,752 new infections in the previous 24 hours, the highest figure it had logged up to that point. That increase brought the cumulative total to 387,481.

Put side by side, the two reports show the scale of the spread over a short period. The cumulative count moved from 387,481 on 31 October 2020 to more than 400,000 on 2 November 2020.

The reports placed Ukraine within the wider COVID-19 pandemic in Europe, which was the context in which the figures were recorded at the time.
