Ukraine passes 10,000 COVID-19 deaths after record daily toll

A look back at the pandemic milestone Ukraine reached on 18 November 2020, as a neighbouring crisis also drew attention in the region.

What did it mean when Ukraine's COVID-19 death toll crossed 10,000? On 18 November 2020, the country passed that threshold after a record 256 new deaths were reported over the previous 24 hours.

The figures were the central public-health fact of the day: a cumulative total above 10,000 and a single-day high in reported fatalities. The two numbers were reported together, and both marked the pandemic's progress in Ukraine as of that date.

The regional picture was also in the news. On 17 November 2020, Belarusian opposition leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya called on European leaders to impose sanctions on supporters of President Alexander Lukashenko. Her appeal followed reports that police had used tear gas, rubber bullets and stun grenades to disperse protesters.

The reports from these two days do not link the events. Taken together, they show a region dealing with a health emergency in Ukraine and continued political confrontation in neighbouring Belarus.
