Ukraine's booster rollout and Russian troops in Kazakhstan

A look back at two developments reported around 7 January 2022, one in Ukraine's vaccination campaign and one in Kazakhstan.

What did the news look like on 7 January 2022 for readers following Ukraine and its region? Two reports stood out, one at home and one abroad.

On 6 January 2022, a day before, Ukraine began administering booster shots of the COVID-19 vaccine. They were offered to all adults who had received their second dose at least six months earlier, extending the country's vaccination campaign beyond the initial two-dose course.

On 7 January 2022, the Russian Ministry of Defense reported on the situation in Kazakhstan, where protests were under way. It said Russian troops deployed to the country had maintained control of Almaty International Airport. It added that they had secured critical government buildings in Nur-Sultan, including the Ak Orda Presidential Palace.

The two reports concerned different matters: a public health measure inside Ukraine and a military deployment in Kazakhstan, reported by the Russian defence ministry.
