Ukraine's court ban on Stus book and record COVID-19 figures

A Kyiv court ruling on a book about the poet Vasyl Stus came as Ukraine reported rising daily coronavirus infections in October 2020.

What was happening in Ukraine's courts and hospitals in the days before 23 October 2020? Two developments stood out in the days leading up to that date.

On 19 October 2020, the Darnytskyi District Court of Kyiv granted a lawsuit by Viktor Medvedchuk seeking a ban on the non-fiction book "The Case of Vasyl Stus" by Vakhtang Kipiani.

The pandemic was also worsening. On 17 October 2020, Ukraine reported a record 6,410 new COVID-19 cases within 24 hours, according to a statement from the National Security and Defence Council (NSDC). In the same period 109 patients died, the highest daily death toll since the start of the pandemic.

The daily count rose again within days. On 21 October 2020, Ukraine registered 6,719 new infections in 24 hours, a new high, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 309,107, according to the NSDC's interactive map.
