Ukraine's COVID-19 caseload passes one million

Posted: | Filed under: Society | by Borderland staff

A look back at the milestone recorded in Ukraine's pandemic count in late December 2020.

What did it mean when Ukraine's coronavirus count passed one million? On 24 December 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic in Ukraine reached that threshold, as reported at the time, with the number of cases in the country exceeding 1 million.

The milestone was noted in reports dated 23 December 2020, which said the number of people who had fallen ill in Ukraine had gone beyond 1 million. Entries for 24 December 2020 also list Ukraine surpassing one million cases as part of the wider pandemic in Europe.

The figure marked a stage in the country's experience of the pandemic, which by then was being tracked as part of the broader European picture. The reports gave the headline total and did not break it down further.

Elsewhere on 23 December 2020, the administration of US President Donald Trump imposed additional sanctions on Belarusian officials and four offices. The measures targeted human rights abuses that occurred during protests against President Alexander Lukashenko.
