A look back at the days leading up to 23 November 2020, when Ukraine reported repeated daily records in cases and deaths.

How bad had Ukraine's autumn COVID-19 wave become by 23 November 2020? The days immediately before that date showed a country setting new daily marks almost every day.

On 18 November 2020, Ukraine passed 10,000 total deaths from COVID-19 after a daily high of 256 new fatalities in the previous 24 hours. The next day, 19 November, brought another high: 257 new deaths and 13,357 new cases, taking the nationwide death toll to 10,369 and the total number of cases to 583,510.

Case numbers kept climbing. On 20 November, Ukraine reported 14,575 new cases in 24 hours, a daily high, bringing the national total to 598,085. On 21 November, a further high followed: 14,580 cases in a single day, lifting the total to 612,665.

In four days, therefore, the country went from crossing the 10,000-death threshold to a cumulative case count above 612,000.

A regional backdrop

Elsewhere in the region, on 17 November 2020, Belarusian opposition leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya called on European leaders to impose sanctions on supporters of President Alexander Lukashenko. That came after police used tear gas, rubber bullets and stun grenades to disperse protesters.
