A look back at the days before 24 November 2020, when daily case and death counts in Ukraine kept setting new highs.

How bad had Ukraine's COVID-19 outbreak become by 24 November 2020? The days leading up to that date brought a run of new daily highs in both infections and deaths.

On 18 November 2020, Ukraine passed 10,000 total deaths from COVID-19 after a new daily high of 256 fatalities was reported over 24 hours. The next day, 19 November, the figure rose again: 257 new deaths and 13,357 new cases were reported, taking the nationwide death toll to 10,369 and the total number of cases to 583,510.

Case numbers continued to climb. On 20 November, Ukraine reported 14,575 new cases in 24 hours, bringing the national total to 598,085. On 21 November, a further single-day high of 14,580 cases lifted the total to 612,665.

Within four days, from 18 to 21 November 2020, the daily case count therefore rose from the 13,000 range to nearly 14,600, while the death toll stood above 10,000. That was the situation as 24 November 2020 began.
